Naruto is the only manga I currently follow, and I never understood his love for ramen, until I was introduced to a restaurant in downtown Toronto called Kenzo Ramen by my dearest Junjue. Kenzo makes their noodles, soup base, and most sauces in-house, which results in an amazingly fresh and delicious product. I had the tonkotsu ramen, which uses pork bone soup broth as it’s base. With the first mouthful, I immediately understood why Naruto is depicted in complete ecstasy as he digs into a big bowlful, and why he would do anything for it. I used to scoff and think, pshh its just instant noodles. I stand gladly corrected.
The noodles were springy and bounced off my teeth, and I could taste the enormous difference between dehydrated instant noodles and this. The soup base perfectly complemented the noodles, and I could not detect any MSG (didn’t get crazy thirsty afterwards either). The meat was cooked to perfect tenderness, as was the egg, and the bowl was decently sized. My only complaint is that they only give half an egg, for presentation’s sake I presume. I would definitely love to have a whole one. Mmm… just thinking about it is making me crave a bowl so badly… why is all the good food so far away?
